2010 TAB and BCB Concert
I was putting together a list of my top ten concerts of 2010 when the realization hit that my fandom of Brandi Carlile and The Avett Brothers had reached the level of a 10 year old girl’s love of Justin Bieber. So, to get a little variety I’m going to give BCB and TAB their own list. 1. Brandi Carlile @ Neumo’s The “secret show” in her hometown felt more like a meeting of an exclusive...

Jet Lag
Via Kevin Drum: http://motherjones.com/kevin-drum
A lot of people believe that if you, say, travel to Europe, all you have to do is force yourself to stay up all day on your first day and you’ll be OK. You won’t be. Here’s why: twice a day your body releases stimulants that wake you up. This is (awkwardly) called “clock dependent alerting,” and it happens once...

Brandi Carlile is an extraordinary performer. Nuff said.

Calexico
Belly Up - April 17
Tucson’s Joey Burns and John Convertino surround themselves with world class musicians and spin tales of the southwest.

My Favorite Live Shows of 2009 #4
Missy Higgins
Orpheum Theater - April 10
I’ve got a weakness for female pop singers. (At least for the ones who can write, sing and play)
My Favorite Live Shows 2009 #5
Blind Pilot
The Casbah - April 10
Their album, 3 Rounds and a Sound, is terrific and they’re an excellent live band (I saw them play three times this year). If their next record comes close to the quality of their first they’ll be playing much bigger venues in the near future.
My Favorite Live Shows #6
Thao With the Get Down Stay Down
The Loft @ UCSD April 28
I saw a lackluster Thao show at The Casbah a few weeks ago. She was at the end of a long tour and was obviously wiped out. That was not the case in April when she was an absolute powerhouse.
She really responded to the crowd that skewed young, female, and Asian. It was also the politest crowd I’ve ever experienced at a rock show...
My Favorite Live Shows #7
Blitzen Trapper
BellyUp July 13
I have great (probably romanticized) memories of FM radio from the early seventies. The days when you might hear the Beatles, Grateful Dead, Dylan, Neil Young, and CSN&Y played on a drive to In ‘n Out. A Blitzen Trapper show is kinda like that.
BT’s influences are certainly not hidden far below the surface. They can be heard loud and clear which...
My Favorite Live Shows #8
The Monsters of Folk
Speckels Theater October 20
Indie notables and good buddies Conor Orberst, M Ward, and Jim James joined forces and and put on a show. At three hours it was almost too much of a good thing, but given the talent on stage it probably wasn’t long enough.
My Favorite Live Shows #9
Heartless Bastards
The Casbah September 3
My early September entertainment calendar had a born out of wedlock theme. I saw Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds and the Heartless Bastards in the same week. Both were excellent.
The Heartless Bastards feature big fuzzy guitars and are fronted by the Chrissie Hynde-esque Erika Wennerstrom. The crowd at The Casbah was relatively small, but...
My Favorite Live Shows #10
Fanfarlo with the Freelance Whales
The Casbah November 24
I like Fanfarlo’s record well enough. It’s a bit out of my country/rock sweet spot, but I thought several of the songs had potential to very compelling live. So, when I spotted Fanfarlo on The Casbah calendar I immediately clicked on the Get Tickets button.
I was not disappointed. The six person band sounds a little like...
