Fanfarlo with the Freelance Whales

I like Fanfarlo’s record well enough.  It’s a bit out of my country/rock sweet spot, but I thought several of the songs had potential to very compelling live.  So, when I spotted Fanfarlo on The Casbah calendar I immediately clicked on the Get Tickets button.

I was not disappointed.   The six person band sounds a little like a mash up of Jens Lekman and Arcade Fire.  I love their diverse instrumentation (everything from a fiddle to a saw) and the wall of sound they produce.

What put this show in my top ten though was the opener Freelance Whales.  Going into the show I knew very little about the group, but it didn’t take more than a song or two to realize they were more than your run of the mill Casbah opener.

FW like Fanfarlo features solid songs played on a wide variety of instruments.  Good stuff.
